The Do’s and Don’ts of Crisis Communications

Tuesday, September 18, 2018
Time:12 to 1:30 p.m.
"Do Prepare”…"Don’t try to do this alone." Ok, that’s common sense. But how about this:
"Do Briefings”…"Don’t do Interviews." Wait a minute, I thought we were supposed to use every tool available to tell the public what they need to know during a crisis? Now you say turn down an interview opportunity?
Let’s take a deep breath, and take the time to talk about the Do’s and Don’ts of crisis communications by taking a look at some lessons-learned.
And by the way, although our speaker has been doing this, and teaching this for many years, Karen
Terrill stresses that she doesn’t know it all. She welcomes your input. We hope you will send in your lessons-learned as the presentation is going along. And we will discuss as many as possible at the end.

Speaker:

Karen Terrill
Media Survival Group

Karen Terrill teaches crisis communications as a contractor with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

She is the President of Media Survival Group and a former television news anchor, producer, reporter, and talk show host for ABC and NBC affiliates. As a broadcast journalist, she covered national political conventions as well as many natural disasters.

Karen served as the Lead PIO for CAL FIRE, and the Communications Officer for the State Fire Marshal. As a PIO, she responded to fires, floods, earthquakes, and more.

In other words, she has been on both sides of the microphone under the most challenging situations. Today, she shares her "survival tips" with a variety of clients, especially other PIOs.

Karen is a proud lifetime member of CAPIO, and is the 2012 recipient of CAPIO's Paul B. Clark Award for Excellence in Communications.
